Legislative Branch

The Legislative Branch of Student Government Association is the Assembly. The purpose of the Assembly is to closely represent the views and ideas of the 20,000+ students at Illinois State University. The Assembly performs tasks ranging from confirming Executive appointments to passing legislation.

The Assembly is composed of twenty senators, each serving a one-year term, elected in the Spring semester of each academic year. The Assembly Officers, consisting of Speaker of the Assembly, the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, and the Secretary of the Assembly, are elected by the General Assembly at the start of each term.

On-Campus, Off-Campus, and Graduate senators are elected by the student body at-large. Underrepresented Senators are appointed by the Student Body President and confirmed by the General Assembly to ensure representation of each Academic College and all Registered Student Organizations (RSOs). Each of the five On-Campus senators represents a different area of campus (Residence Halls). The eight Off-Campus senators represent students living off-campus and are divided randomly. Graduate senators each represent half of the graduate student population.

General Assembly meetings are held every other Wednesday evening in the Circus Room, Bone Student Center at 7:00 p.m. All meetings are open to the public. Students are encouraged to attend.
