With ground breaking expected to begin in May 2008, the new Student Fitness and Kinesiology Recreation Building is the largest project paid completely by student fees in recent history. The building will be nearly 170,000 square feet, costing $43.9 million. This facility will include many new amenities, such as a rock climbing wall, more studio space, a spinning room, a high ropes course, nearly triple the pieces of equipment, green space and will be located in a prime space for easy student access. This exciting project is expected to be completed in the Fall of 2010.

It is hard to miss all of the construction going on in Uptown Normal. It is important the Student Government Association works with Town of Normal Officials to bring retail and restaurants that will attract students. With well over 300 Registered Student Organizations on campus, communication between these groups becomes a challenge. This year, the Student Government Association will be working with the Student Involvement Center to host Presidential Roundtables. These events will bring together leaders from all over campus to collaborate and share information that will promote growth and foster a cohesive campus culture.
Underrepresented Senators will be utilized by RSOs to enhance communication between student groups and the university administration. These Senators represent the voice of RSOs within the policy-making process.
Last year, the Student Government Association hosted the USA Today Readership Pilot Program. The program brought copies of USA Today and the Chicago Tribune to students, available for pick up at a variety of convenient locations on campus. The newspapers can be used as part of the university curriculum, and are also an excellent resource when looking to remain civically engaged. We will continue working with USA Today and also The New York Times to bring such a program to campus. Students can expect another pilot program with the NY Times in the near future. In the mean time we continue to explore opportunities for funding and researching the program’s success at other universities. Please contact Jason W. Illinois State University prides itself in being a campus that celebrates diversity. The Student Government Association will be promoting conversations across campus that will address cultural differences, attitudes, and ways to bring students of diverse backgrounds together. The findings will be used to develop a better understanding of our university community, and discover new ways to foster relationships between students, faculty, and staff members. Additionally, the Civic Engagement Committee will be working with organizations across campus to support programming aimed at underrepresented groups on campus. Please contact Jason W. With the major upcoming elections, the Student Government Association will work to educate students on candidates, and encourage the university community to be active citizens by registering to vote.

The Civic Engagement Committee is committed to cultivating a civically minded and politically engaged student body. Some initiatives on the horizon include a voter education week concept, working with political organizations on campus, and other voter education outreach efforts.
